Animal shelters in Azle and Weatherford are having a “half-price sale” on all animal adoptions from now through the end of January.
The sale is designed to honor the memory of Fort Worth animal rescuer Andrea Benua, who drowned last Monday in an icy neighborhood pond in North Fort Worth while trying to save two of her dogs.
Benua was 34 years old. “It’s something my own daughter would have done,” said Weatherford shelter director Dianne Daniel, former director of the Azle Animal Shelter. “She was young and didn’t fear for her life. She just wanted to save her pets.” A distraught Italian greyhound alerted animal control officers to the icy neighborhood pond where divers recovered Benua’s body as well as those of Artimus, another Italian Greyhound and Mallory, a Rottweiler puppy.
Benua and her husband Tom, who was in the hospital for unrelated reasons at the time, were described by friends and family as “real dog people.” In a television news report Warren Cronin, a family friend, said that the Benuas, “didn’t have any children, so they just loved dogs, rescued dogs.” “The best way we can honor her is to get homeless pets adopted,” said Daniel. Wanda Skaggs, director of the Azle Animal Shelter, echoed Daniel’s sentiments. “It’s a tragedy to lose someone who had such compassion for animals,” she said. “It’s an honor to be able to do this in her memory.” Adoption prices include microchipping as well as the first set of shots and spay/neutering, if needed. Azle half-price adoptions are from $7.50 to $40. At press time, the Italian greyhound who went missing after alerting officers to the spot where Benua went into the water was still missing. His name is Gollum. |
