The Azle High boys soccer team has already locked up a playoff berth and knows who its bi-district opponent will be. It would take a freak of nature for the girls to miss the postseason.
The boys lost to Aledo 5-1 and Saginaw 4-0, but it hardly mattered since the Hornets are locked into third place.
Kevin Taylor got the Aledo goal off a Christian Saldana assist. “Our kids never gave up,” coach Jeff Brentz said after the Bearcats scored early. Falling behind quickly also hurt against Saginaw. But: “We just got short-handed due to some kids coming out due to nagging injuries,” the coach recalled. The Hornets will face Denton Guyer at Boswell Thursday, March 18 at either 7 or 7:30 p.m.
A victory by the girls Friday March 12 at cellar-dwelling Springtown places Azle third and sends AHS to Northwest HS to face Birdville Friday, March 19 at 6 p.m. A tie puts Azle fourth. A loss would mean the outcomes of other matches would determine the Lady Hornets’ fate. A 1-1 tie with Saginaw put AHS in this position. “It was the best team soccer we’ve played all season,” coach Trent Davis said. |
